Alan De Herrera is an independent photojournalist, aviation and air‑to‑air photographer, documentary director, and writer whose work explores humanitarian efforts, military culture, aerospace innovation, and dog rescue organizations. He produces immersive feature stories on military aviation and humanitarian work in austere environments such as Haiti, Ukraine, and regions of South and Central America. His reporting and photography have been featured in publications including Smithsonian Air & Space Quarterly, Forbes, The Washingtonian, Skies magazine, Military Times, Hook magazine, Westways, the Pensacola News Journal, and Modern Dog and Dogster magazines.
Since 2010, De Herrera has worked in challenging environments across Haiti, Ukraine, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Morocco and many others. He has embedded with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadrons, and U.S. Air Force units, and has documented military embeds aboard several U.S. Navy ships, including the USS Carl Vinson, USS Iwo Jima, USS Bataan, USS Makin Island, and USS Arlington. He has written and photographed feature stories on the legacy of the U.S. Air Force’s KC‑10 Extender air tanker and the U.S. Marine Corps Harrier, documenting the aircraft’s final year of operations while working with several squadrons, including VX‑31 “Dust Devils,” on an exclusive project at NAWS China Lake.
De Herrera’s fieldwork includes traversing Latin America and in Haiti with mobile medical teams including USAID, United Nations and the World Food Program, along with documenting dog rescue groups in war‑torn Ukraine and along the Colombian–Venezuelan border, and producing portraits of the space shuttle *Endeavour* for United Airlines. Since 2010, he has conducted air‑to‑air photography with stunt pilots in high‑G environments for National Geographic television and other productions.
He has also worked internationally with organizations such as the World Food Programme, the United Nations, the U.S. Navy and Army, the Tailhook Association, the Plasticos Foundation, USAID, World Vets, and other humanitarian and military partners. He has directed three feature documentaries—*Sea Lions – An Unforgettable Adventure* (2007), *Jumper Maybach* (2015), and *Seal Island* (2026)—including projects narrated by actors Sean Astin and Edward James Olmos.
